Break out your ugly sweaters, help donate to a wonderful cause and get a FREE wine tasting! December 17th is “Ugly Sweater Day” and we are turning it into a weekend of fun while spreading the holiday spirit.Β We are teaming up with Good Harbor Vineyards to help collect food items for Leelanau Christian Neighbor’s “Blessings in a Backpack” program.
Food Insecurity in Leelanau’s Children
We believe no child should go hungry, and with the upcoming holiday break, now is an important time to help make sure the children in our community are supported and nourished.
We learned from Leelanau Christian Neighbor (LCN) that, “Despite the food bounty produced by our orchards and on our farms, many Leelanau County children live in households where they may not know where the next meal is coming from. Almost 20 percent of the children in Leelanau County live below the poverty level β a 66 percent increase since 2005. And over 23 percent of young children under five qualify for food assistance. While free and reduced lunches and breakfast programs at local schools can help during the week, the weekends bring on a new crisis of hunger for many children.” Learn more on LCN’s website.
